Since I want to do a project based on food, I started researching different illustrations that include food. I always get inspired by work, that includes many small details. I am also inspired by photography and graphic design. In this post I have included different types of work that I thought is really inspiring. Work that is very well presented gives me so many ideas what I should include in my work and what would work and suit and what wouldn’t.
For my visual essay I decided to create a magazine of illustrations instead of a video or photo album. I decided this because I wanted to make something really different in my portfolio as well as show different variations of presenting visuals. There are different images that I have include below that really inspire me. All of the images I have included are editorial style, that is suitable for magazines. I wanted to create illustrations that are very strong visually for the information that is so shocking. The idea of my visual essay is to show the danger of fast food marketing. I want to show how people are affected by junk food because the way it is marketed.
What I learnt from these illustrations: is that it includes certain colours, not the colours I am used to see in children’s illustrations, it has colour palette that has to be consistent and kept throughout the illustration.
Another really important, aspect of illustrations is that it clearly convey the message that should show and help to viewer to remember the information that is in the text. All the illustrations included in this post, makes the viewer to think about what is visualised, as if the viewer is thinking about the visual presentation of text, that makes illustration really memorable.

We had to present our work and we received our feedback. There were so many interesting projects in class. There were videos about anorexia, video game affect on children, rap music effect on people etc.
All of the projects were really inspiring. It is really beneficial to see other people work in order to get inspired and to get more ideas about your future work. What is more it is very interesting to get feedback from the class about your own work as well. The comment that I really remember was “when I look at the illustrations they give me a feeling that I am hungry and that I want junk food”. I was very delighted about this feedback, because I was aiming to create illustrations the way junk food is marketed and how nice they look. It seems that I created illustrations that would pay attention.
After I created all sketches I started adding them into computer and applying colorus and making them to look neat and finished. I chose a colour scheme that I liked my illustrations to be. I chose colours that would be warm and welcoming as these are the colours when food is marketed. What is more, it is important to keep consistency in my illustrations, because they should look as from one set. therefore not to include unnecessary colours and do not change the style of my illustrations.
I have included all of my illustrations below that I created using the sketches I created earlier.
After going through different inspiration that I found, and watching videos and talking in labs, I decided to start sketching ideas for my essay. I want to use an old pen and paper, where what ever comes to my mind put on paper and then start creating my idea on the laptop.
In order to star my ideas I had all articles and text written first, so I have illustrations based on the information, as this is editorial type of illustrations. I really enjoy creating illustrations that take the idea and creates beyond its simplicity and makes it to look creatively and interesting.
My sketches are not accurate and all the accurate work i create on the computer, paper and pen is necessary to draw my ideas until I am happy and I visualise what I had in my mind. I never was neat in my sketches as I intend to do that in the progress of redrawing it and adding colours.
When I need inspiration I start looking at videos with artists that achieved a lot, and that really inspire me. I learn from them just by listening to their ideas, looking at their work, and listening to their tips, that are so inspiring. I have included videos, that really include people who are truly amazing in what they do.
Bob Gill is a great designer, his work is different because he thinks about the idea, not about how to make things to look beautiful. His work is inspiring, because it includes ideas, not just different styles or fonts. I do believe that if you want to be a good designer you have to think of how to make your design to stand out from the crowd. If you are asked to create a logo for a New York company, it does not have to include an image of New York, there should be an idea that it conveys the message in the clever ways.

I am very passionate about his work and the style he has in the illustrations. Also I get inspired by his journey of finding the way to create his style. He did not have his style all the way in his career,he started by looking for his style, and that really inspires me, because I look for the way to get inspired, and find my style in order to start create a work that makes me happy.
Jonathan MCHUGH
He is an illustrator and has editorial illustrations in his portfolio. I really love his work and his presentation really inspires me.

This video is about how woman feel and how they feel when they are looked at, and how they feel about it. There was an interview taken of how women felt about different perspective of nudity and how it is displayed. The information links to different epochs, such as renaissance. it highlights ideas, such as in medieval art woman is blamed for being naked and a man becomes an angel of god.
This video is created in 1972, and the view of nudity of women interviewed is very different to the society nowadays. Nudity is accepted really different nowadays, then it was in 1972. Celebrities in films, newspapers and magazines, do not try to avoid nakedness, as they seek attention, so the community is getting used to the fact that nudity displayed is not something as shocking as it was.
The shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, is a video that starts with explaining what a state of shock means. This video includes different footage that is combined to visualise the idea, that is should reach audience. The footage is collected from different times, with well known people, footage used in the video is very well edited, so it shows the meaning of words, that are told by the same person in the background. Images like 911,where she explains and arguments, who are those people who attacked, what were the reasons of attack, etc. the narrative voice in the video also assist the viewer to absorb all the information and to understand the meaning of every aspect in the video.
During the lab we were analysing two images that includes the same theme but were very different. Both images were about alieans, but their presentation was very different. In the images aliens were presented as positive vs negative presentation of them. The first image of the film is old fashioned and the film about aliens was created in 1951 and is called :

This image above, includes so many different angles of the film. There are many different scenes that are all combined in the one. It has so much information that does not have to be displayed on the cover in one image. The cover of the film really makes aliens to look negative. Where in the image below aliens are presented as innocent and friendly creatures, that should unite with us n 2010.
The image above is a cover of dvd for the film that was created in 1984, it is still not a new movie but its design and is so different comparing to the image that includes many images put together. 2010 movie cover is clean, has less detail, and conveys message even better then the first design, even there are so much less information given. Using small light, and a baby highlighted by this small light,which is between a baby and earth really creates a connection image.
During the lab of Digital Media within Society, we were analysing images that were created earlier, not in recent advert posters but, poster that were created several years ago.
The futuristic Samsung poster of two types with a male and female, really does not look futuristic at this time. It opposite looks old fashioned and very different to what we see now. During the class we were discussing what angles are used, what font, and how appealing it is to audience. Most of us, agreed that these posters do not look appealing nowadays, its more like looking an old film, and think of editing techniques that are so different to recent advanced styles.
Another image included an advert with perfume, where different fonts are visible and style is not as old fashioned looking as the posters before. It has the look and style that you can still feel in new perfume adverts. Well the givenchy advert was created in 2006 where samsung phone you decide advert was created in 2005, but a huge difference is visible between these two advert images.
