Approach taken to design and development

hile there was an idea of what I want to do the difficulty was in choosing which software to choose for creating interactivity. Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects were already used for creating visuals, however I have to find the best solution for creating an actual game. There was an idea to create all game in Adobe flash however, it needs android or ios device, there was an access to iOS device but there was no access to android and there was not enough knowledge in order to create the whole game in Adobe flash at this time. Another software could be unity, however there was not much knowledge of this software as well, in order to create a successful final year project. Another idea of creating an interactivity was in Indesign, however animations only are created as swf files, and again it requires android device to test it so it would not be a great idea to choose it and not being able to test it. Finally GameSalad, a tool that was used in order to create game example in semester 1. There were already a bit of knowledge about it and also a support received from my lecturers that it would be the best idea to continue with the tool that was used and had a full research in Semester 1. After discusions were carried out with lectures and advises were given that this is definitely the best solution considering the time remaining and that this tool was already used in semester one.

User testing

In order to understand if the product is completed successfully it requires to be tested. This game was developed and designed for children that are 2 years and over and that age category users should test it. There were two users that tested the game: 3 years old girl and 4 years old boy. Both children were entertained by the game. The difficulty was noticed with 3 years old girl that she was not English native speaker so she required her mother for assistance in understanding couple things. There were couple things that were not explored by both users that were available but both users completed all tasks expect one scene which took longer and a bit of assistance by the mother. Mothers of both children were very delighted that children enjoyed this game as it thought their children bout healthy eating and fruits and being in the outside environment. What is more, there were few errors spotted while testing was in the progress and they were immediately fixed, as it would not cause any more issues with the game. Main questions children asked while testing the game were the following: where characters are from, what are their names.

game for ad hoc

This was a very long process to upload game for ad hoc testing. Gamesalad does not have any updated tutorials with ad hoc so it was very difficult. The another issue was once it was uploaded that it includes ads that cannot be removed. This is very annoying for testing as it keeps showing ads every page. I do understand that ad hoc should looks exactly the same way as it will be once it is uploaded it is still very annoying. It just shows that GameSalad has free version down sides.

Challenges and milestones

The biggest challenges of the game are learning how to create and develop a game in a new tool – Gamesalad. Gamesalad was never used and it does not contain enough tutorials available, this requires a careful studying and understands of coding. Gamesalad is a drag and drop tool and does not require to write any code, however for those who want to create a fully functioning game it is possible to write a code and expand the features of what is already offered by Gamesalad.

Studying Gamesalad should not take too long as it still needs to be illustrated and designed as well as tested. The challenge is to create milestones that allow completing all these tasks.

Errors occurred once game salad was updated

There are not so much time left for finishg the whole project and I wanted to test again and it would not allow to test on my device as gamesalad has been updated so it must be updated the gamesalad viewer. This meant that i had to upadated all information again which takes quite a long time. Once this was done and gamesalad viewer was downloaded again it would still not allow me to test it on my device. I have sent many emails to Gamesalad regarding this issue. Before the email was replied I managed to sort this issue. This was one of the moments where it felt that nothing works anymore. Luckily it was all fixed and I could test it again.

creating an icon for iOS

The icon should be simple and should not include too many details so it looks nice and not too busy. The hardest decision was to decide which character to use. Finally I decided to choose Kiwi character and include all other fruits around her. ikona

Review of technology for designing a game and all assets

Review of technology for designing a game and all assets
In order to design all assets for a game there will be two software used. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are tools that was a part of the course from year 1 to year 4. Adobe Illustrator will be used in order to create the images and shapes of characters, all little and detailed parts of the game. Adobe Illustrtaor is chosen because it has many tools that are very easy for tracing images from sketches to outlines and adding solids colours. It is also very easy to export and bring it to Adobe Photoshop. What is more, Adobe Illustrator has the ability to work with shapes very easily. Once images are traced and have the solid colours in them, the images are brought to Adobe Photoshop.
In Adobe Photoshop there are many tools that assist in creating beautiful digital paintings. Characters and backgrounds should be in the same style. All of the characters and background will be digital painted in Adobe Photoshop using all different brushes and blending modes to create cartoony and 3-D looking assets. Every single element should be painted to the smallest detail so it is very appealing to children. What is more, some of the parts will be added together so it has depth of field and looks even more interesting. Also depth of field will be used in order to differentiate the background from characters and other parts so it does not become too difficult to look at it and understand what is more and less important.
